Premier League Referees Could Force Cristiano Ronaldo To Real Madrid

12:34 PM
press in Madrid have pounced on the latest rumblings of discontent from CR7…
Spanish daily AS have picked up on a story from England’s Daily Mail suggesting how Cristiano Ronaldo might finally have an excuse to ditch Manchester United and the Premier League for Real Madrid and the Primera Division.

Both papers highlighted how the Portuguese ace is growing tired of the lack of protection being offered by the referees in the Premier League following his latest round of confrontations with the match official during last weekend’s game at Fulham.

Even the player’s manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, has opined that his star winger is being ‘systematically fouled’ by opponents.

“It has become a tactic,” Ferguson was quoted as saying by The Daily Mail. “Someone fouls him, then someone else. The referee thinks he is diving and the crowd are screaming.”

The Scotsman also used a Champions League clash with Villarreal as an example of the disparity between referees in England and the rest of Europe.

During that game back in November at El Madrigal, Italian referee Roberto Rosetti sent off the Yellow Submarine left-back, Joan Capdevila, for a rash tackle just above Ronaldo’s knee. And Ferguson admitted that such a foul in England would probably have not drawn a red card.

It is precisely that extra protection from La Liga referees and a less physical approach in the Spanish game that AS is convinced will attract Ronaldo and tempt him to seek an exit from Old Trafford.

It is widely believed that Madrid already have the funds ready to sign the FIFA World Player of the Year. Furthermore, it has also been whispered that an agreement has been reached with Ferguson to allow the two parties to negotiate a transfer this summer - which, if true, means that it is now strictly up to Ronaldo whether he wants to leave United for the Santiago Bernabeu.

Jason McAteer : Steven Gerrard Is Better Than Kaka

12:32 PM
Jason McAteer believes that Steven Gerrard could the best player in the world at the moment.
Former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer has expressed his belief that Steven Gerrard is the greatest midfielder in the world, claiming that the closest anyone comes to competing for the best in Gerrard's position is Brazilian superstar Kaka.

Speaking to Sky Sports News, McAteer shared his thoughts,"When a player like Steven Gerrard, arguably the best player in the world at the moment, gets space then he'll hurt you all day long.

"You can't really compare him to Lionel Messi because they both influence the game in different ways.

"The closest to Steven Gerrard at the moment is probably Kaka - and I would say Gerrard is above him in the best player ratings.

"He influences the team all over and it's not just about the goals. It's what he does off the ball, his movement and the way he brings players into the game."

Gerrard has managed to net six goals in his last three games for the Reds, and recently claimed his first Premier League hat-trick for the club.

Despite the skipper's talismanic attributes and recent form, McAteer believes that Liverpool's success of late can be credited to the team as a whole.

The retired midfielder also professed that the Anfield outfit do not enjoy the same kind of squad depth as rivals Manchester United, and worries that the international break might affect Rafa Benitez's selection options even further.

"If you look up and down the spine of Liverpool's team you've got [Pepe]Reina playing fantastically well - then there's [Jamie]Carragher, Gerrard and [Fernando]Torres.

"When those four players are on their game they'll influence the rest of the team. Fabio Aurelio has been absolutely brilliant in the last four or five games and Albert Riera played fantastically well on Sunday. We know all about Dirk Kuyt too. The whole team has played collectively.

"Unfortunately, what I'm worried about is this international break. It's just come at the wrong time - but it's a great time for Manchester United.

"Sir Alex Ferguson can go away, take stock of what's happened, bring his team back together and go from there.

"Liverpool will want to go out and play another league game. It's all about keeping those players fit because their squad's not as strong as Manchester United's."

Off the back of 'Pool's recent results, McAteer believes that the team have the momentum to go on and win the Premier League title, but concedes that his former club does not possess the experience that Sir Alex Ferguson's squad has.

"I don't think you can ever write Liverpool off," he added.

"I've seen them a lot this season and they've not been in great form, but they've been hard to beat and when the chips have been down they've nicked points.

"We've had a lot of luck, but I was just waiting for them to find a bit of form and they've certainly done that over the last three games.

"I haven't seen them play better than this all season.

"But you can't rule out Manchester United. Sir Alex Ferguson's got the blueprint, he's done it year in year out and we'll see how his players react.

"Winning this Premier League title is new to Rafa Benitez, but we've got the confidence and momentum to go into games and turn teams over."

Robin van Persie Confirms He Will Stay At Arsenal

4:38 PM
The Gunners' Dutch striker is perfectly happy to stay in north London for the foreseeable future.
Arsenal striker Robin van Persie has affirmed his desire to remain at the Emirates Stadium as long as he is contracted to the club. The Dutch international's current contract expires in 2011, but he is hopeful that he may ink a new one soon, according to press reports.

However, the 25-year-old is desperate for the Gunners to start winning trophies, and hinted that a lack of silverware might well be the reason he would consider an exit.

"I’m not happy just playing - I want to win things and I think that is a good thing," he told English tabloid The Sun.

"It is not my aim just to qualify for the Champions League. I want to win the Champions League and I believe we can. It is not just that I want to play in the FA Cup. I want to win it, and that is what I have always said.

"I am not a guy who gives up easily. I have a contract until 2011 and I will respect that. About my future, I can’t say much more."

The forward concluded on a positive note, asserting that the January signing of Russian playmaker Andrey Arshavin had provided a huge boost for the Gunners, and that the returns to fitness of Theo Walcott and Cesc Fabregas were also more than welcome at this stage of the season.

He said, "The signing of Arshavin is a really good one - and we have Theo coming back.

"Cesc is coming back and he is our heart-beat. He is really important for us because he controls the game, slowing it down and speeding it up."

Arshavin Could Be With Arsenal For The Long Haul

4:36 PM
Andrey Arshavin has hinted that he may well stay at Arsenal until the end of his career.
Andrey Arshavin arrived at the Emirates stadium during the January transfer window with the acquisition of the playmaker seeming like a long overdue addition for most Gunners fans.

After a long and drawn out transfer saga, the Russian finally made the switch from Zenit St. Petersburg, penning a deal with Arsenal that ties him to the north London club for three-and-a-half years.

Since his arrival at the club, Arshavin has impressed any unconvinced fans by adding some much needed flair to Arsenal's attack - something that had been lacking due to the influx of injured players.

In light of all of this, the 27-year-old has spoken fondly of his short time spent at the club so far, and hinted that he might play out the remainder of his career at the Emirates.

"The players have been friendly, I feel comfortable with the team," he told Sky Sports News.

"It is too early to make any conclusions, since little time has past, but my contract is long enough."

"It will probably last until the end of my career.

Gabriel Agbonlahor Called Into England Under-21 Squad

4:30 PM
The 22-year-old has been called-up for the games against Norway and France...
Aston Villa's versatile forward Gabriel Agbonlahor has been called-up to the England under-21 squad ahead of the upcoming fixtures against Norway and France.

The 22-year-old was in the full England squad for the friendly against Spain in February and started the game to earn his second full international cap.

However, he has since experienced a barren run in front of goal, failing to add to his 11 goals this season in his last seven appearances.

The 5ft 11in striker now has the chance to add to his 13 England under-21 caps, during which time he has found the back of the net four times.

Meanwhile, England under-21 manager Stuart Pearce has also called Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross and Portsmouth defender Martin Cranie into the squad.

Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor has had to withdraw as a result of injury, as has Arsenal forward Theo Walcott, while Tottenham Hotspur winger Aaron Lennon has been added to the senior squad.
